  1. APPLE AND SYMANTEC TO DELIVER
  2. NEXT-GENERATION DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT FOR MACINTOSH ON POWERPC

  4. CUPERTINO, Calif. -- May 12, 1993 -- Apple Computer, Inc. 
  5. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) today 
  6. announced an agreement to work together to develop and market 
  7. the next-generation development environment for Apple 
  8. Macintosh computers.  The environment initially will target 
  9. Apple's PowerPC-based systems, and will address the needs of 
  10. developers creating native applications for those systems. 
  11. Macintosh on PowerPC is expected to ship in the first half of 
  12. 1994.

  14. The two companies will share engineering resources and build 
  15. upon Symantec C++ 6.0 for Macintosh, an object-oriented 
  16. development environment introduced today at Apple's annual 
  17. Worldwide Developers Conference.  The new environment will also 
  18. build upon Apple's Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW), a 
  19. comprehensive suite of development tools for professional 
  20. programmers.

  22. Through the joint-development efforts, the two companies plan to 
  23. provide developers of Macintosh-based applications with a suite 
  24. of high-quality, easy-to-use tools that facilitate teamwork 
  25. among programmers working together on a development project.  
  26. The new development environment will be marketed by both 
  27. companies as a successor to MPW. Apple will continue to support 
  28. developers who rely on MPW.

  30. The new environment will be based on an open architecture that 
  31. enables interoperability with tools developed by other vendors.  
  32. Consequently, developers will be able to customize their 
  33. development environment by integrating the rich technology from 
  34. Apple and Symantec with their favorite tools from third-party 
  35. vendors.

  37. Apple is bringing computer systems to market at a rapid pace, 
  38. requiring developers to get their products to market faster, 
  39. said Steve Weyl, Apple's director of developer tools.  Our 
  40. partnership with this leading and proven vendor will help 
  41. provide timely availability and interoperability of the best 
  42. tools technology from Symantec, Apple and other tools vendors.

  44. The PowerPC represents the future of Macintosh computing, said 
  45. Gene Wang, Symantec's executive vice president of applications 
  46. and development tools.  We intend to maintain our leadership 
  47. position in the Macintosh development tools market by working 
  48. closely with Apple and building a world-class environment for 
  49. PowerPC application development.

  51. This agreement expands the formal working relationship between 
  52. Apple and Symantec, which began in June 1992, with a 
  53. joint-development agreement to provide a cross-platform 
  54. application framework.  Known as Bedrock, the framework is 
  55. designed to make it easier for application developers to create 
  56. products for both Macintosh computers and Windows-based PCs.  
  57. The next-generation environment will enable developers to take 
  58. advantage of Bedrock in designing, building and testing 
  59. applications for both Macintosh computers and Windows-based 
  60. systems.  A first look at Bedrock, the Bedrock Architecture CD, 
  61. was announced today.

  63. The close working relationship between the two companies has 
  64. already resulted in delivery of a Symantec C++ development 
  65. environment by incorporating technology from both companies.  
  66. Symantec C++ 6.0 for Macintosh includes all of THINK C 6.0, also 
  67. introduced today, and Apple's SourceServer, a source-code 
  68. management system that helps development teams manage large and 
  69. complex projects.

  71. In addition, using Apple's ToolServer, the two companies have 
  72. enabled access from Symantec C++ 6.0 for Macintosh to many of 
  73. the MPW tools.  As a result, Symantec C++ 6.0 for Macintosh 
  74. combines the power and flexibility of MPW with the ease-of-use 
  75. and productivity of Symantec's development environment.
